The blockage is almost never technical. It's that nobody has the mandate.
In a mid-sized company, the AI agenda belongs to no one. The owner has no time to arbitrate between twelve tools. The IT director, where one exists, manages estate and security, not a business automation strategy. Functional directors ask for different, sometimes contradictory things. The result: every department pays its own subscription, nobody knows the total cost, and two promising pilots died for lack of an owner.
Hiring a Chief AI Officer would solve it, but the arithmetic does not work: the role costs €120,000 to €180,000 fully loaded, credible candidates are scarce and heavily courted, and a six to nine-month search adds to the ramp-up. For an eighty-person company, it is out of proportion.
The fractional mandate closes exactly that gap: decision-making capability, at the real pace of the need.
